Genesis 22: 1-14 - Come up here - Give God your best!

As part of the Keswick Ayrshire weekend, we were delighted to have Tommy MacNeil with us in West Kilbride and he encouraged us to 'Give God our best!' from Genesis 22 and the story of Abraham and Isaac.

1 Samuel 2: 26-37 - Judgment on Eli and his family

In this passage in 1 Samuel, we see judgment being brought upon Eli because of his failure to discipline his sons and put the Lord first.

We ask the question as to whether we are putting the Lord first - and how the Lord's judgement can be merciful.
We also think about how even though it is 1 Samuel, there are already whispers of Jesus here!

1 Samuel 2: 12-26 - The Dreadful, the Delightful and the Difficult.

In this sermon on 1 Samuel 2: 12-26 we see the focus begin to shift onto the person of Samuel. Samuel is growing up in the Tabernacle and is faithfully serving the Lord.
We see:
The Dreadful - The awful sin of Eli's sons.

The Delightful - God's grace and favour to Hannah.

The Difficult - That the Lord has decided to bring judgement on Eli's sons before Eli even rebukes them because their hearts are hard.

1 Samuel 2: 1-11 - Hannah's Prayer of Praise!

In this sermon, we see Hannah praising God for giving her a son and taking away her shame. However, from her own personal and lived experience, Hannah then moves to give thanks for the character of God and for the salvation which he will bring of which her own experience is a small token.

1 Samuel 1: 19-28 - Hannah Surrenders All!

In this sermon, we see Hannah's prayer is answered as she bears a son - Samuel. However, we also see how Hannah is faithful to her promise to give Samuel over to the Lord despite the temptation it must have been to keep him for herself. We also think about the importance of handing our children over to the Lord.

In this sermon, Robin Davis leads us through Hannah's prayer of pain as she seeks the Lord in her despair. We are reminded that God hears us and cares for us in our pain - and we can trust in him.

1 Samuel 1v1-8 - Hannah's Pain

In this sermon, we think about Hannah and her struggle to conceive - particularly when she is being taunted for being childless. We explore and look at examples in the Bible of women who have struggled like Hannah - and we see how God often looks out for those who are struggling and is gracious. It is a reminder to us that in our struggles, God truly does care.

Endtimes - Matthew 24: 26-51

In this sermon, we look at Jesus' teaching on the endtimes. There is much in this passage that is difficult and is debated and we consider some of those issues including the Great Tribulation and the Millennium.

However, we see that Jesus' application is easy for us to understand - that he is going to return again, and when he does we need to ensure that we are ready.

Man does not live by bread alone - Matthew 4 and Deuteronomy 8

In this sermon, Robin Davis picks up a lent theme and shows how Jesus used the Scriptures in the face of temptation. In a similar way, we also need to spend time in God's word.

Seven Woes - Matthew 23: 1-39

In this sermon, we look at the seven 'woes' or 'sorrows' found in Matthew 23 as Jesus condemns the hypocrisy of the religious leaders.

We think about how we need to follow Jesus' kingdom ways to avoid hypocrisy - and how Jesus grieves over those who turn away from him.

Matthew 22v34-46 - The Greatest Commandment and the Messiah

In this passage in Matthew's Gospel (Ch.22v34-46) we see the Pharisees again trying to trap Jesus and Jesus again astounding them with his answer about the greatest commandment.

Jesus then asks the Pharisees a question about the Messiah.

In this sermon, we think about how the greatest commandment - to love God and our neighbour - is linked to who the Messiah is.

Death is not the end - 2 Corinthians 5v1-10

In this Evening Reflection, we think about the subject of death from 2 Corinthians 5: 1-10. But rather than this being morbid, we are reminded that death is not the end - that eternal life is a reality - and that should affect how we live here on earth now.

Trying to Trap Jesus - Matthew 22v15-33

In this sermon, we see the Pharisees and the Sadducees trying to trap Jesus into saying something that would lead to his arrest.
The Pharisees lead with a question about taxes whilst the Sadducees question Jesus with a convoluted question about the resurrection.
In answering these questions, Jesus shows wisdom that only God could show and that He is the truth.

The Parable of the Great Feast - Matthew 22:1-14

In this sermon, we look at Jesus' parable of the great feast. In this parable, we see how many are invited, but it is important to be appropriately clothed. Only Jesus can clothe us with the righteousness we need.
